Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is said that 3-20% of American people suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is not like any
particular condition like Inflammatory Bowel Disease, rather it is a group of intestinal symptoms
that usually come up together. This is why IBS is also called Spastic colon, Mucous colitis, Spastic colitis,
etc. Though the symptoms may differ from person to person, they can disrupt your daily life in a bad way.
IBS normally lasts three months for at least three days every month.

Symptoms of IBS

In this bowel syndrome, women are affected more than men. Though the typical symptoms of IBS
include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating and gas, constipation and diarrhea, the symptoms may vary
for men and women.

Women with IBS may observe changes in symptoms according to their menstrual circle. Sometimes
women who are in menopause or pregnant can also experience IBS. Women are most likely to
experience symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, food sensitivity, painful menstruations or Pre-menstrual
Syndromes.

There is a possibility that the male gut is less sensitive to symptoms of IBS because of hormonal
differences. Men with IBS find difficulties in completing their work, home, and social obligations,
depression and anxiety as well.

Causes of IBS

The exact causes of IBS are not well-known. But major factors are—
1.       Strong intestinal muscle contraction can cause gas, bloating and diarrhea where weak
contractions lead to constipation.

2.       You can experience abnormalities in the nerves of your intestine that can cause discomfort
because of gas or stool when you stretch your abdomen.

3.       IBS can develop intestine inflammation and severe infections in the intestine.

4.       According to research Microflora bacteria (“Good Bacteria”) living inside intestines might
change for people with IBS.

IBS triggers

IBS symptoms can be prompted by the following factors—

1.       Food: If you have certain foods and beverages including wheat, dairy products, beans,
cabbages and carbonated drinks may trigger IBS.

2.       Stress: Stress can aggravate symptoms of IBS in most of the people.

3.       Hormones: Hormonal changes in women can play a great role in IBS which is why it is worse
at the time of their menstrual periods.

Complications

Chronic diarrhea and constipation are common occurrences in the case of IBS that may cause hemorrhoids.
Young people and women have the highest chance of experiencing IBS. Many people with poor or severe

IBS can face a poor quality of life. The signs and symptoms of IBS are also associated with mood disorders
such as depression or anxiety. Also, IBS can potentially lead you towards weight loss.

Treatment

symptoms with proper treatment. Doctors usually suggest home remedies before starting medications.
You need to bring a change in your existing lifestyle that includes physical exercise, smaller meals,
reducing stress, etc. You should also avoid spicy and oily foods, indigestible sugars, beans, and dairy
products to reduce IBS. You can also take the help of a counselor or mindfulness training to
